- A review of activities to date on the Demonstration sites was presented by Tom Keating. Discussion ensued regarding remote care giving technology.
- Tom Keating presented outreach and training activities updates. Activities discussed were the Capital Demonstration Day in June; the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services meeting in March; Seniors and People with Disabilities meeting in September; the Oregon Housing and Community Services Summit in February; and the Seaside Housing Summit in September.
- Gerald Stolp presented additional updates on the Seniors and People with Disabilities meeting where the development of the Blueprint for System Change was discussed.
The CMS Real Choice Grant Blueprint for System Change, Draft Version 12.04.07 prepared by Gerald Stolp and Tom Keating was reviewed and discussed by the members. Committee members offered the following feedback:
- Re: Item I: All five points are necessary; we need/want assistance to promote and realize technology potential.
- Julia Huddleston can be helpful in determining Medicaid funding, etc.
- What are specifications and the cost of wiring to make housing technologically ready?
- Need to raise issue with the State of Oregon to get better deals for folks so they can be technologically ready/prepared.
- Consider, in future, inter/intra community communication; e.g. “mutual nurturing.”
- Re: Oregon Signature Center: the Governor/Legislature considering an initiative for an Oregon Center (similar to Nanotech). The goal is for the State to invest substantial funding to create an infrastructure to support this.
- Care providing agencies need to have up-to-date, usable AT information and to develop competencies in using technology. How to disseminate that?
- Also consider on-going support issues and how to acquire needed/relevant resources.
- The training aspect of the Recommendations section is IMPORTANT.
- Increasing access to computers is an issue.
- Need to address and emphasize end-user training for PWD.
- Clarify what Medicaid will and will not fund; get the word out.
- Include self-advocates in the process.
- An observation: regarding PWD In-house videophone technology (Net Meeting) fostered greater interaction, support, and boosted QOL.
- Safety, health, relationships - - how can self-advocates use technology to address these important concerns?
- General agreement: support for all Recommendations.
- Wireless set ups could work in older projects build without tech ready wiring.
- Important to include testimony from end-users and private organizations on their experience with technology for self-care, remote monitoring, etc.
